Consumers and businesses in Colorado stand to benefit enormously from the passage of House Bill 17-1227, which directs the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to establish energy savings goals for investor-owned electric utilities for ten years (2019-28).

The measure passed the Colorado state house on April 4 and the state senate on May 9. Gov. John Hickenlooper signed it into law on May17.

HB 1227 amends and updates successful legislation, adopted in 2007, which has resulted in $1.3 billion in net economic benefits for the customers of Xcel Energy and Black Hills Energy. Households and businesses served by these utilities will realize hundreds of millions of dollars of additional benefits thanks to the passage of HB 1227.

“SWEEP thanks the bill sponsors, Representatives Faith Winter and Polly Lawrence, and Senators Kevin Priola and Stephen Fenberg, for their leadership in guiding this legislation through to passage. SWEEP also thanks Governor Hickenlooper for swiftly signing the bill into law,” said Howard Geller, SWEEP’s executive director.
