Colorado Legislature Adopts Appliance Standards Bill
(Boulder, CO) - The Colorado legislature has passed HB19-1231 which sets minimum energy- and water-saving standards for 15 different residential and commercial appliances and products sold in Colorado. The bill also enacts minimum energy and water standards on any products for which such standards are rolled back by the Federal government.
“The standards included in HB19-1231 will save energy, water and money. Colorado residents and businesses are expected to save over $1 billion as a result this legislation. We are proud to see Colorado join other states in passing strong and consistent appliance standards,” said Howard Geller, Executive Director of the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP).
“Hardworking Coloradans are already saving about $500 per year from previous federal appliance standards. While product performance has improved, we are still finding ways that we can save people money, better conserve our state’s water, and reduce pollution emissions all at the same time,” said Rep. Meg Froelich, one of the lead sponsors of the bill.
“Energy efficiency standards puts more money in the pockets of Coloradans by helping them use less energy and lower their electricity bills,” added Rep. Cathy Kipp, another lead sponsor of the bill. “Every appliance standard covered in this legislation has been shown to be cost-effective and to save consumers money.”
"Governor Polis has set bold goals for climate action and clean energy. Energy efficiency is the most cost-effective way to both meet our energy needs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Passage of HB19-1231 means appliances sold in our state meet up-to-date efficiency standards---a big win for consumers and the environment," stated Will Toor, Executive Directoro of the Colorado Energy Office.
SWEEP brought the proposed energy and water standards to Colorado legislators and played a key role in advocating for their adoption. Governor Jared Polis is expected to sign HB19-1231 into law.
