builder Pulte Homes is a leader in
energy-efficient homes in Arizona. The builder has partnered with
Engineered for Life
to help them build quality, energy-efficient homes that are 30-50% more
efficient than the 1995 MEC with little or no additional cost. This impressive
result is obtained by using a systems engineering
approach to design and construction. Pulte also provides homebuyers utility
bill and comfort guarantees.
To cite some examples of its systems approach, Pulte builds exterior walls
with 2x6 construction at 24 inches-on-center rather than conventional 2x4
construction 16 inches on center, thereby creating more space for insulation
without significantly increasing lumber requirements. Pulte uses high efficiency
windows, sealed ductwork, and other measures to reduce the cooling load, but
then is able to reduce air conditioning system size and capacity to lower costs.
