While much of the economy is tanking, energy efficiency jobs in Arizona are booming. Thanks to growing consumer demand and financial incentives for energy-saving products and services, Arizona’s energy-efficiency workforce is on the rise – with jobs cutting across multiple skill levels and trades.

ATS Electric is one of many Arizona businesses that have been revitalized thanks to increased energy-efficiency activity in the state.

Like many businesses in Arizona, ATS Electric struggled when the economy took a downward turn. But they have found an energy-efficiency light at the end of the tunnel.

After a dramatic downsizing – going from 130 employees to just 25 – ATS Electric shifted their focus from new-construction electrical work to lighting retrofits and business has taken off like crazy. They’ve been able to re-hire 33 people, 85% of whom were unemployed, from a variety of backgrounds.

With lighting accounting for up to 50% of electricity costs, there seems to be no shortage of businesses looking to make upgrades and save some money. Especially given the quick payback – generally just 6 months – and the financial incentives offered by a number of the state’s utilities. ATS Electric has gone from scraping the barrel to having work booked-out for months.

In 2010 ATS Electric completed 543 projects for Arizona Public Service customers, estimated to save them $835,000 in annual energy costs.
