Accel Electric

While much of the economy is tanking, energy efficiency jobs in Arizona are booming. Thanks to growing consumer demand and financial incentives for energy-saving products and services, Arizona’s energy-efficiency workforce is on the rise – with jobs cutting across multiple skill levels and trades.

Accel Electric is one of many Arizona businesses that have been revitalized thanks to increased energy-efficiency activity in the state. The company got into the lighting industry as a preservation measure – to keep business afloat.

Owner David Hayes never anticipated revenue in the electrical service industry would drop by nearly 70% with the downfall of the economy - but it happened. Instead of wallowing in misfortune, Hayes began looking for new opportunities to take his employees’ existing skill-sets and apply them to something new. By refocusing efforts on electric car charging installations and lighting retrofits, business has bounced back.

Having suffered layoffs, like most contractors, it was a relief to begin hiring again. Since the beginning of the year, Accel Electric has grown its employee base by 25%.

Hayes anticipates the lighting retrofit business will continue to grow and provide a much-needed opportunity for contractors to get their companies back to where they were in a thriving economy. As he puts it, they’ve only just scratched the surface.
