Program Overview
Most
industrial facilities have many opportunities to reduce
their energy consumption through improved efficiency,
which reduces energy costs and helps improve
competitiveness, while also reducing carbon dioxide and
other air emissions. Some of the main obstacles to
improved energy efficiency include shortages of staff
and capital, and often a lack of trained staff/technical
expertise.
The Colorado Industrial Energy Challenge (CIEC) is a
voluntary program designed to help industrial facilities
overcome these barriers. The CIEC program challenges
companies to set a five-year energy efficiency goal, and
provides assistance in the form of free energy
assessments, networking and training opportunities, and
public recognition from the Governor's office. The program
is open to industrial facilities in Colorado with more
than $300,000 in annual energy costs. For this program,
“industrial” includes all types of manufacturing; oil,
gas and mining operations; ski resorts; research and
development facilities; and municipal water utilities.
SWEEP leads the CIEC
program, which is funded by a three-year grant from the
Colorado Energy Office (CEO) and the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE). (See
CIEC team.)
