Southwest Energy Efficiency Project

University of Utah

The University of Utah, which has a student population of about 26,000, has made extensive energy efficiency retrofits throughout its campus in an effort to save energy and money, in a partnership with Rebuild Utah and the Utah State Energy Program. The University operates 294 buildings, many of which are 30- to 40-years old and have inefficient heating, cooling, lighting and water equipment. Retrofits included state-of-the-art lighting technologies; high efficiency non-CFC based chillers, energy management controls; a new central heating and cooling plant, efficient electric motors and pumps, and new cooing towers.

The project is being implemented through a performance contract with an energy services company (ESCO). The ESCO finances the retrofit measures and is reimbursed through receiving a portion of the energy bill savings. Although the multi-year project is not completed, the University is already saving $3.2 million in annual energy costs.
