Southwest Energy Efficiency Project

State Highway and Transportation Department

In response to Executive Orders to cut energy use by state agencies, the Highway and Transportation Department (HTD) established a comprehensive energy management plan that resulted in over $600,000 in utility bill savings as of June 1998 for its headquarters building alone. Among the measures implemented, the lighting system was replaced with electronic ballasts and T-8 lamps. The HTD also upgraded more than 30 patrol buildings with energy-efficient lighting, ceiling and wall insulation, and infrared heating systems. The HTD spent $540,000 of which ECMD provided $389,000. As a result of HTD’s energy management plan, it leads all other state agencies in savings over a 5-year period (see chart below).
