Moving Toward Zero Energy Homes
Workshop
Albuquerque, NM
On June 20, 2008, SWEEP and the State of New
Mexico Energy, Minerals, & Natural Resources Department, Energy Conservation &
Management Division co-hosted a workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Moving
Toward Zero Energy Homes. The workshop focused on constructing high performance
homes, including ‘net-zero energy’ homes that produce as much energy as they
consume on an annual basis.
The workshop provided a forum
to learn about and discuss the features, cost and performance of highly
efficient homes, and to develop strategies for increasing the adoption of more
efficient homebuilding practices in New Mexico. The workshop attracted
approximately 50 participants, representing custom and production home builders,
energy efficiency and renewable energy industry consultants, architects, and
state and local officials. The workshop was sponsored by PNM Resources.
Presentations highlighted the
features, performance and cost-savings of high performance homes, technical
assistance resources available for homebuilders, such as utility incentive
programs, and advanced technologies that are beginning to be introduced into the
home building industry, including Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), integrated
solar photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, and indirect-direct evaporative
cooling equipment. Representatives from the State of New Mexico described
incentive programs and training resources available to homebuilders, including
the
Sustainable Buildings Tax Credit, and plans for future programs to support
high performance homes in New Mexico.
A roundtable discussion was
held, in which participants discussed barriers to high performance homes in New
Mexico, and developed recommendations for next steps. Suggestions included
expanding utility incentive programs to support highly efficient homes, training
appraisers and realtors about the value of high performance homes, and how to
effectively market them, working with homebuilding industry suppliers to
encourage them to stock more efficient products and equipments, and providing
increased training for builders, contractors and trades. Below you will find
links to all of the materials and presentations from the June 20th workshop.
