Building Efficiency in the Southwest

Cost-effective energy efficiency measures for residential and commercial buildings in the Southwest include:
  • Reducing heating and cooling loads through shading, proper orientation, and reflective surfaces, such as cool roofs

  • Improving the building envelope through air sealing, higher insulation levels and more efficient windows

  • Installing high efficiency heating and cooling systems, including evaporative cooling

  • Using energy efficient water heating, including gas tankless and solar thermal systems

  • Installing ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and lighting, and turning electronics and other devices off when not in use

SWEEP promotes the adoption of programs and policies that increase the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings. There are many opportunities to save energy in residential and commercial buildings in the Southwest.

SWEEP works to promote more efficient building practices in the Southwest by:

  • Advocating for the development and adoption of more stringent residential and commercial building energy codes at the state and municipal levels
  • Conducting analyses and outreach on the benefits of highly efficient homes, including ‘zero-energy homes'
  • Participating in utility energy efficiency program planning and advocating for additional utility incentives and programs that support building efficiency, such as training and design assistance
  • Developing case studies of exemplary energy-efficient buildings and projects in the region
